For students transitioning into college—and even for those who have been at it a couple of years—knowing how to eat and exercise properly is an important part of keeping a healthy body and mind. Recently, Chris Weeldreyer, DBU’s director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer, gave some pointers on exercise, eating, and the benefits of both.
1. Why is it important for students to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
There are probably too many reasons to count for students to maintain a healthy life style. The most important reason is the fact that the decisions you make now on your own are most likely to stick with you long term.
2. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, are there any specific foods that college students should try to avoid? What are some good alternatives?
The biggest and hardest foods to avoid go hand and hand and that would be fast food and over-processed foods. When eating fast food, try to stay away from fried food and choices that contain more carbs than protein. Also, when you look at the ingredients in your meal, generally the fewer the ingredients there are the better. Following the food pyramid is the best way to eat for a balanced and healthy diet.
Late night food runs are common in college, and also really hard on your body and your waist line. If you can avoid them, that would always be better. Also, following the rules from above and limit your portions.
3. What are some key components that every student should incorporate into their lifestyles, especially for those students who are not necessarily athletes?
I think the most important thing is be active. You should do at least 30 minutes of some kind of exercise a day. That does not have to be in the weight room or on a treadmill. The DBU campus has a lot of outdoor options like sand volleyball, basketball, and rec sports. Just do something!
4. What kind of activities would be most beneficial for someone who may not know much about working out?
Again, you should do 30 minutes of something active daily. I really think that intramural sports are a great option because it is a great way to work out and a way to meet people. Also, if you see somebody doing something you don't know how to do, just ask them. They may be willing to help you learn, and it is always fun to learn new things!
