...and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:10)
As we embrace this new path in life, this new walk, this new manner of living, we now devote our energies to useful tasks. We strive to discern, to understand, to unravel what it is that pleases the Lord. Before our only concern in life was to meet the demands of our own selfish black heart. We did what we pleased, based on our own immediate criteria. Now we have been freed from the tyranny of self, from the hungry heart that wants everything for itself and never finds satisfaction in anything. It is like waking up from a long sleep. We can now see the world for the first time, truly see it. We can begin to see the connections, the grand scheme of God’s majestic creation, and our own place within it. Now we know our lives serve a purpose within God’s eternal and wonderful plan. And we eagerly pursue this plan. We seek God, we strive to discern what it is that pleases him.
What makes God happy? What does he desire for my life? What does he want for my wife, and how can I give it to her or make sure that she can receive it? Now my first concern isn’t simply that my children do the things I ask them to. What does God want for my child’s life? What did he put in my child, and how does he intend to use that in his paths of life and light? How can I nurture the things in my child that God treasures? Whole new vistas open up for us as we walk in light, as we squint into God’s glorious light and try to grasp all we can of it. We want to live a life that pleases him, because we have discovered in him all that is good and right and glorious, and we want nothing more than him in all his glory.
